GAME DESCRIPTION
Welcome to the Time Capsule: A Rediscovery of ActRaiser (1990)
If you're a fan of retro gaming, or if video games have taken a backseat to life's bigger challenges, prepare to embark on a journey through time. Today, we’re diving into a game that might seem old-school, but it’s anything but dinosaurs—ActRaiser! Released in 1990 by the legendary Quintet for SN Entertainment (now Enix), this game is a blend of platforming, city-building, and role-playing that feels as fresh today as it did back then.
The Protagonist's Dual Role:
At the heart of ActRaiser is the player’s character, "The Master." However, you’re not actually playing The Master—you’re playing an angelic avatar who guides his progress through various gameplay modes. In simulation sequences, you take on a statue-like role to build and protect The Master’s civilization. This involves managing resources like roads, lighting, and weather to grow the population and unlock new technologies that improve your society’s quality of life.
But when it comes to action, things get intense. You switch into action mode by controlling a statue and navigating through levels filled with monsters. Here, you’re the angel who must slay bosses using lightning, rain, sun, wind, or earthquakes as “miracles.” Each level has its own set of challenges—spike pits, falling platforms, and boss fights that require precise timing and skill.
The Simulation Mode:
In simulation mode, The Master’s civilization is your focus. Starting with two humans, you work to expand the population by building homes, factories, and other structures. The game introduces a unique twist with flying monsters from four lairs that must be defeated before they respawn and destabilize your society. By sealing these lairs, you can upgrade your city and unlock advanced technologies for your civilization.
As your population grows (or should I say, as your society becomes more prosperous), your hit points (HP) and special Points of Spirit (SP) increase, allowing you to perform more devastating miracles. The ultimate goal is to level up your civilization by reaching the maximum population possible—16 billion! When this happens, you can upgrade to higher-tier homes like castles or cathedrals that make your city the envy of the world.
The Action Sequences:
When simulation mode ends and action mode begins, The Master returns as a statue. Now it’s all about defeating the bosses—each level has its own theme based on real-world religion or mythology. Think Greek gods like Zeus or Hindu demigods like Rama. These boss fights are tough, but they’re where your miracles shine!
The final battle is an action-packed marathon with no time for setup—it’s pure boss fighting until you emerge victorious.
Plot: A Divine Dilemma:
The game’s narrative revolves around a god-like being named The Master and his nemesis, Tanzra (or Satan). After The Master was defeated by Tanzra centuries ago, the world split into six lands ruled by his lieutenants. These beings turned humanity evil.
Decades later, The Master awakens and works to rebuild civilization through prayer. As he defeats Tanzra’s lieutenants one by one, he notices that people no longer worship him as they once did. Instead, they’ve grown independent and rely on their own problem-solving skills.
Finally, after slaying all of Tanzra’s followers, The Master confronts the evil being himself in a massive boss battle. After his victory, The Master returns to his sky palace with his servant, ready to continue guiding humanity if needed.
ActRaiser is a game that bridges nostalgia and innovation. Its blend of platforming, city-building, and divine conflict creates an experience that feels timeless. If you’re into retro gaming or just enjoy a good story with a cast of unique characters (and maybe a little bit of philosophy), this one’s worth revisiting. Who knew playing as an angel and statue could be so much fun?
