GAME DESCRIPTION
The classic arcade game that had us all buzzing back in the '80s. Developed by Sega and released in 1987, After Burner is a rail shooter that catapulted you into the cockpit of an F-14 Tomcat fighter jet. Your mission? To blast your way through 18 unique stages, obliterating everything in sight—enemy jets, that is!
The game's got some serious firepower at your disposal. You've got a trusty machine gun and just enough heat-seeking missiles to keep you popping off those bad guys. And let's not forget the hydraulic "taikan" motion simulator arcade cabinet, which simulates an authentic aircraft cockpit with flight stick controls and hydraulic motion that moves, tilts, rolls, and even rotates the whole setup to match what's happening on screen. It was designed by Sega vet Yu Suzuki and his team, aiming to create a truly immersive gaming experience.
After Burner was intended as Sega's first "true blockbuster" and was designed outside the company, tucked away in a place called Studio 128. This allowed for more flexible working hours and helped keep the game's development a closely guarded secret within the company. The plan was to give the game an aesthetic similar to Laputa: Castle in the Sky, but Suzuki opted for a more accessible Top Gun look instead.
And oh, what an impact it had! The game was a commercial success worldwide, making it Japan's second highest-grossing large arcade game of 1987 and overall arcade game of both 1987 and 1988. In America, it was among the top five highest-grossing dedicated arcade games of 1988. Critics were wowed by its impressive visuals, gameplay, and presentation, earning it a place in gaming history as an important and influential title.
Follow-ups and ports of After Burner followed, popping up on various platforms like the Master System, ZX Spectrum, and Famicom. Sega also produced successors to capitalize on its success, such as G-LOC: Air Battle. Even more impressive? After Burner has been referenced in many other Sega video games, like Fighters Megamix and Shenmue. So yeah, if you're a fan of shoot 'em ups or classic Sega games, this one's got your name all over it.
