GAME DESCRIPTION
Top Gear is a top-down perspective game with three characters: a driver (the hero), and two passengers. The player can choose to control each character at any time; whichever character is currently selected, the other two companions are controlled via artificial intelligence.
The game features eight different types of weaponry that players must master by swinging them repeatedly until they reach full strength. Weapons are upgraded with Weapon Orbs found in dungeons or earned by defeating certain bosses. The player takes each Orb to a blacksmith located in most towns who uses it to reforge one weapon, allowing the character wielding that weapon to gain new special attacks.
Combat is real-time and involves an energy bar at the bottom of the screen indicating how much damage can be done when attacking. Swinging weapons causes this gauge to empty but quickly recharge for full strength. The party wields these eight different types of weaponry in a variety of locations, including dungeons or defeated bosses where they may find Weapon Orbs.
Traveling through the world is possible with Cannon Travel Centers; players must traverse an enemy-infested countryside before reaching a destination via a giant cannon. This feature makes use of SNES's Mode 7 capability to create a rotatable background that gives the illusion that ground beneath Flammie (the player-controlled miniature dragon) is rendered in three dimensions.
The game also features magic spells which are represented by the Eight Elements: Water, Earth, Life and others that represent specific elements. Magic has skill levels similar to weapons but each spell costs mana points to cast.
Top Gear was created by a different developer from Lotus series of games, QUByte Interactive. The game was released for modern systems under the name Top Racer Collection on March 7, 2024.
